At some stage we have all reached for a lip balm saviour. Whether it is during the cooler months when the humidity in the air is low and our skin can't naturally absorb the moisture in the air or a windy day has gotten the best of us and completely stripped the gentle, thin skin on our lips. As our lips are in such a prominent location, it makes them more vulnerable to the elements, which can result in dry, cracked, red or windburn lips.

When we are experiencing trauma on the skin, our attention tends to focus on that particular area and we end up constantly touching, covering or in this case with our lips, we tend to lick them constantly to try bring moisture and life back to them. This is where our DIY lip balm with essential oils is so handy to keep close by.

Essential oils to use in DIY lip balm

Lavender essential oil: Lavender plays an important role in skin care. It is a good antimicrobial and has been shown to have skin regenerating properties. Renowned for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties, Lavender can help heal and repair the skin.

Spearmint essential oil: Spearmint essential oil could be used for the treatment of irritated skin and for conditions such as itchy skin as it is very refreshing.

Peppermint essential oil: Peppermint essential oil has a cooling action, and in very low dilutions, can be usedful for the treatment of sunburn and itchy skin. Due to its stimulating nature, Peppermint can induce a slight tingle on the lips which may give a slight plumping action.
