The recent shift in mindful consumption has lead to more people making their own products at home. If you're interested in getting started with DIY products, the easiest place is in the bathroom. There are many benefits of creating DIY products, in particular reducing waste and the toxic chemicals that can enter your body. The best thing about making your own sugar body scrub is that you get to choose your preferred consistency and fragrance.

We've created a recipe for a DIY body scrub that is all natural and chemical free, better for you and the environment. We recommend starting with a small quantity and experimenting with the consistency before creating the full amount. You can also change fragrance depending on the time of the year, choosing more warming and hydrating oils in Winter; and opting for more uplifting and cooling oils in summer.

Here is our favourite recipe for a beautiful detoxifying and refreshing all natural body scrub.

Essential oils for DIY Body Scrub

Geranium essential oil benefits

With a herbaceous rose like scent, Geranium essential oil helps us return from anxiety to a place of calm while retaining alertness. Wonderful for use at the beginning of a hectic day or as an emotional restorative in the afternoon.

Geranium is a great choice if you experience acne as it is antibacterial + anti-infectious helping with congested pores. It is also beneficial for helping with circulatory disorders making it a perfect contributor to a sugar body scrub.

Peppermint essential oil benefits

The beautiful, fresh and invigorating aroma of Peppermint essential oil is uplifting and therapeutic for the mind and body. It's cool, crisp scent imparts a sense of freshness, purity and cleanliness.

With its stimulating nature due to the menthol component, Peppermint essential oil may help with muscular pains, sinus congestion and digestive problems. A great choice to be using strategically in areas of concern.

DIY Sugar Scrub With Essential Oils

What you'll need

  • 1 cup Epsom salts

Epsom salts are a great ingredient to use in your DIY Body Scrub as they are renowned for helping with muscular or arthritic tension while helping us to relax.

  • 1 cup raw sugar

Raw sugar makes for an excellent, gentle topical exfoliant. It will help to soften and alleviate dead skin cells from the skin leaving it soft & subtle.

Fractionated Coconut Oil helps to hydrate the skin or apply essential oils to the body without irritation. It is a form of Coconut Oil that will remain as a liquid and not solidify in cold temperatures.

Method

  1. In a bowl, add the Epsom salts, raw sugar and coconut oil. Mix thoroughly.
  2. Pick your favourite essential oils (or use the above suggested) and add 20 drops in total to the mixture.
  3. Mix together until homogeneous and transfer into a glass jar.

How to use

Using your hand or a spoon, apply a small amount of body scrub to the desired area to help detoxify and hydrate the skin.

Note: Mix before each use as the oil may accumulate on the top layer.

"It's great knowing what I am putting and using on my skin - peace of mind that it is healthy both for myself and the environment"
