There are no set rules when it comes to blending oils, ultimately it comes down to your preferences, but there are a few guidelines that will help you if you’re new to blending oils. Typically essential oils from the same category blend well together, as do essential oils from one category that are matched with oils from a complimentary category.

Floral oils blend well with other floral oils, woody oils and citrus oils.
Herbal oils blend well with other herbal oils and woody oils.
Citrus oils blend well with other citrus oils, floral and woody oils.
Essential oils can be absorbed into the body either through the nose or the skin. When they are absorbed through the skin they enter into the bloodstream which carries the healing molecules throughout the body. When you inhale an essential oil, the molecules travel through the nasal passage and are carried throughout the body. The aromatic molecules trigger the limbic system, a primitive part of the brain, which is associated with memory and emotional response and can help enhance or alter our emotional state. Once the limbic system is triggered, neurotransmitters such as serotonin and endorphins are released.
An essential oil blend is a combination of two or more pure essential oils. Essential oil blends are ready to use pure essential oils usually driven with a purpose or feeling in mind. You can also make your own essential oil blends with your favourite essential oils. It is worth recording your successes so you can create similar blends again. There are many different approaches to blending essential oils and it is a great time to get creative and enjoy the process!
The difference between a pure essential oil and an essential oil blend is that an essential oil blend will be made up of multiple pure essential oils. A pure essential oil will contain only one plant extract and will not contain other plant extracts (a plant extract is where essential oils come from).
